Fun. - Stars
“Stars,” by fun., from their new album, “Some Nights.”
Well, my friends, the long-anticipated moment finally came this week - fun.’s new album came out. And I love it.
This song, “Stars,” is one of my favorites on the album, although it wasn’t the first time I listened to it. But the more I listen through the album, the more I love the album as a whole, and the more this song appeals to me. I didn’t like what I felt was the superfluous use of auto-tune at first, but I have realized that Nate Ruess didn’t use it so much to enhance his voice as much as he used it instrumentally. And I think the song is just beautiful.
Also, I love the motif of stars and nighttime in the album. I’ve always been one of the nocturnal sort, so it appeals to me. The word “night” is used 43 times in the album, and the word “star” is used 24 times. Then, in the last song on the album, the lyrics in the final verse are, “The sun will never come, so come on let me in. I will be the sun, I will wake you up. I am who I was, just open up your heart.” The symbolism is just phenomenal, and every time I listen to it I love it even more.
